The pedagogical approach

I want to take a moment to talk about creative dance in contrast to dance technique or fitness focused classes.

Having a body is a singular experience. Both in in sensory novelty and to the individual. Your body is like no other. I think that’s awesome.

While fitness classes are often oriented toward growth in stamina and strength, this class is oriented toward awareness. That is awareness of your body, awareness of others in the group, and choreographic awareness- awareness of dance as an art form.

Art is all about choice making. So rather than striving to change the body, we are here to notice what is already available, what others bring to the space, and what makes you curious.

So your choice making is the star of the show. That’s what we mean when we say “you are 100% in charge of your body, your story, and your experience.” I empower you to say yes and no to what we offer, as you are guided by your expertise in noticing your experience (of your body, the group, the art form).

There are no expectations to fill other than to “notice what you notice.” And make choices that are right for you.

If you are moving you are doing it right. If you are noticing and making choices you are choreographing. This is a space to honor your artistry.

To recap:

If we use music as a metaphor. To me fitness is like maintaining and tuning your instrument. Replacing your strings, keeping the guitar in working order. Technique is like practicing your scales, skill work. Our creative work here, is both like jamming with others and seeing how your sound fits in to the collective, and using both your instrument and your skills to create something new. Composing, creating, discovery.

That’s our purpose.
